3 Signs of a Bad Radiator

Mark Kennedy • August 9, 2022

Is it time to get your radiator checked? You probably noticed the signs but weren’t sure whether it was serious or not. If your radiator is giving you problems, you are going to need to get it fixed immediately to avoid costly damages or even injury! Here are 3 signs of a bad radiator.

Leaks

Have you noticed coolant leaking under your vehicle? You might want to check for red, yellow, or even green fluid. Coolant levels can drop when your radiator is leaking. If there is less coolant, or if your cooling system is not working properly, it will be impossible to reduce the heat of your engine. Repairs are needed immediately here as your engine is probably already overheating.

Overheating Engine

Another common sign to look for when your radiator is failing is an overheating engine. An overheating engine if you ignore it will eventually break down, leading to costly damages and possible cylinder head or engine replacement.

Shifting issues

You may have noticed some issues with shifting. The reason for this is, in some vehicles the
transmission is cooled by its fluid running through the radiator. The radiator can fail and the transmission fluid will become contaminated with coolant. Some shifting issues are a sure sign that you have faults in your vehicle that you need to take care of promptly.

If you are experiencing any of these issues, it’s best to act swiftly. A faulty radiator can lead to serious engine damage that can affect your safety and that of your passengers. Pull over and call for emergency help if needed or take your car down to an auto repair store promptly.
