The Spring-Summer Car Maintenance Checklist

Mark Kennedy • Aug 03, 2021

The warm and sunny months are the perfect time to get your car in good running shape. Following this spring-summer car maintenance checklist will make the job much easier. Many people tend to avoid vehicle maintenance. It may seem overwhelming, but doing a few routine tasks will go a long way towards keeping your car in good running order, so before you head off on that summer road trip, run through the easy tasks on this checklist. You will definitely thank yourself later!

Check your tire pressure & tread

Once you’ve switched your winter tires for summer ones, check the pressure and tread on your summer tires. It might be a good idea to get them rotated at this stage to ensure that they wear more evenly during the months ahead.

Change your car engine oil

Engine oil is one of the most important things needed to keep your car running. You often don’t even think about it, but if your oil runs low or gets heavily contaminated with the dirt and debris it tends to pick up, your car’s performance will start to suffer. In extreme cases, your engine could even seize in the absence of enough good, clean lubricant. You should check your oil levels regularly - every time you fill up with gas is fine - and you should change it every three to six months, depending on how much driving you are doing.

Have your car brakes checked

Your brakes could save your life as long as they are maintained properly. While driving in the rough winter conditions, you may have worn down your brake pads or caused damage or wear elsewhere in your braking system. Make it a priority to get your brakes checked out before you plan to do a significant amount of driving.

Have your battery tested

We have all experienced that sinking feeling that comes with trying to start the car one morning without success because the battery has finally given up the ghost. Don’t get caught in this situation. Check your battery now and replace it if necessary.

Replace worn car wipers

Windshield wipers are often the last parts we think about on our cars. We only notice that our wipers are worn out when we’re driving in heavy rain, and we struggle to see through the windshield because the wipers aren’t able to do what they are supposed to. Replacing wiper blades is easy and relatively cheap, so it is best to get it done straight away.

Other useful tasks include cleaning out the car interior, including the mats; and testing all your lights, including interior door lights, headlights and turn signals. While you’re at it, why not treat yourself and your car to a full detailing? Now is the perfect time.
